Floral Design
In this course, we learned about the elements and principles of Floral Design, and incorporated them into various arrangements. We also completed a cultural research project where we studied the history of Finnish floral design and created an arrangement with Finnish design elements.
Symmetrical Triangle
-
Carnations (orange)
Daisy Pompon Chrysanthemum (yellow)
Leatherleaf Fern
Variegated Pittosporum
Waxflower (pink)
-
One of the elements of design that I believe I effectively incorporated is Line. The use of Daisy mums and Carnations created an implied line on the left and right sides of the the design that create the triangle shape.
One of the principles of design that I believe I effectively incorporated is Balance. As this is a symmetrical design, it was very important to make sure all of the design was balanced and that one part didn’t take away from the overall shape of the design. Everything on this design was balanced and cohesive.
Asymmetrical Triangle
-
Liatris (purple)
Pixie Carnation (red)
Cushion Pompon Chrysanthemum (white)
Variegated Pittosporum
Leatherleaf Fern
Baby’s Breath (white)
-
One element of design that I believe I effectively incorporated is Space. The negative space around the sides of the design frame its shape.
One of the principles of design that I believe I effectively incorporated is Dominance. The area of Dominance is at the bottom right of the design and I believe my use of materials established this well.
Finnish Design
-
Statice
Italian Ruscus
Leatherleaf Fern
Waxflower
Cushion Mums
Forsythia
Pixie Carnations
-
I used Statice in our design to represent the purple of the Wood Cranesbill as well as the look of a airy filler flower.
I represented Ground Ivy in the design with Italian Ruscus because it creates a similar effect of movement and flow in the design.
I used Leatherleaf Fern to represent the ferns in Finnish mythology.
I represented Red Clover and the Lily of the Valley in the design with Waxflower because of the deep pink color associated with Cornflower and the similar shape and growth structure it has to the Lily of the Valley.
I used Cushion Mums because of the similar petal structure and color to the Daisy.
I used Forsythia in the design because of the small yellow flower that St. John’s Wort also has.
I used Pixie Carnations because of its overall shape similarity to Cornflower.
